Meet the team

picture of Phil Taverner Phil Taverner, Assistant Director
Phil trained as a social worker and has more than 30 years experience of child care social work as a practitioner, trainer and manager. This experience spans the UK and New Zealand and includes work in local government, the voluntary sector and education. During the 1990s he also provided consultancy services to several European countries and set up a new family support charity in the UK. In 2008 he made a positive career change to take up his current position as Assistant Director of the NIHR Public Health Research programme.
picture of Sheila Turner Sheila Turner, Senior Research Fellow
Sheila initially trained in microbiology and has experience of primary research and co-ordinating clinical trials. Having worked for the HTA programme for 3 years she joined the PHR programme in January 2009 as Senior Research Fellow.
Hannah Dorling, Research Fellow
Hannah joined the PHR progarmme in September 2011 as a Research Fellow. She previously worked at the University of Southampton as a research fellow in health psychology. Hannah has completed an MSc in Health Promotion and Public Health at Brunel University and has since worked in smoking cessation and weight management in a variety of settings.
picture of Claire Kidgell Claire Kidgell, Senior Programme Manager
Claire joined the PHR programme in May 2010 as a Senior Programme Manager. Previously, she worked for Cardiff University School of Medicine as a Strategic Research Co-ordinator and at the Wellcome Trust as a Science Portfolio Advisor. Claire graduated from the University of Bath and went on to complete an MSc at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Following two-years working at Microscience Ltd, a biotechnology company, she completed a PhD at Imperial College London and conducted her postdoctoral research at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego.

Kate Rodger joined the PHR programme in October 2008 following almost a year working for the HTA Clinical Evaluation and Trials team. Currently her main areas of focus are the planning and delivery of the Research Funding Board, Public Involvement in research and development of a project monitoring process for the programme
picture of Gemma House Gemma House, Programme Manager
Gemma studied Social Sciences at the University of Bath and graduated in 2005. She joined the PHR programme in October 2008 and has focused on the development of the Programme Advisory Board and the programme's marketing and communications. Previously Gemma worked for the University of Southampton's International Office recruiting students. Gemma is curently on maternity leave.
  Louise Higgs, Programme Manager
Louise joined the PHR programme in September 2011 to provide maternity cover for Gemma House. Her main areas of focus include the coordination and delivery of the Programme Advisory Board and Research Funding Board and the programme’s communications activity. Previously Louise worked for a Hampshire-based economic development consultancy firm and Southampton City Council’s neighbourhood renewal team. Both roles involved working with local authorities, other public sector agencies, charities and universities. Louise graduated from the University of Southampton with a BA Geography degree in 2005.
picture of Kristy Cable Kristy Cable, Assistant Programme Manager
Kristy  joined the Public Health Research programme in February 2009 as an Administrator. Her role involves supporting the PHR team in various administrative tasks with a strong focus on refereeing and organising Research Funding Board meetings. Kristy previously worked for Servoca Training Solutions as a Training Support Officer; prior to that she was a Primary School Teacher, teaching Key Stage 2.
picture of Kerstin Goodall Kerstin Goodall, Administrator
Kerstin joined the Public Health Research programme in February 2009 as an Administrator. Her role focuses on the organisation of internal meetings, diary management and conference bookings. Kerstin also assists with the organisation of Programme Advisory Board meetings and is involved in the maintainance of our website and newsletter. She previously worked as PA for a national charity and has spent several years working in Germany for an international company in the medical sector.
